The long-standing target university of terrorists, American University of Afghanistan in Kabul came under attack by the militants resulting in the death of 16 people and injury of dozens of others.

The attack took place on Wednesday evening when the university was buzzing with students and the ordeal continued for 10 long hours. The forces were eventually able to seize the university back and help trapped students in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The attack on the university comes just weeks after two foreigner professors at the American University of Afghanistan were kidnapped at gunpoint from near the University. One of the professors was American while the other was Australian and till date, their whereabouts are still unknown.

“Sixteen people, including eight students, were killed and 53 others were wounded,” health ministry spokesman Waheed Majroh told AFP.

“Some of the wounded are in critical condition.”

It was also reported that the fatalities included policemen, a university guard and a guard of an accompanying vocational school for visually impaired. The rest of the casualties include students and university staff.

Hundreds of students were rescued by the security forces during the overnight operation. During the standoff, students saved themselves by locking themselves up in classrooms and hiding in corners. A number of them also tweeted for help during the horrifying ordeal.

So far none of the terrorist groups has claimed responsibility for the attacks but it took place as the Taliban have increased their nationwide summer offensive against Western-backed government.
