The slain JI leader has been identified as Mirza Zafar Baig, 47, who was targeted in an attack which also included his cousins Mirza Imran Baig and Mirza Nauman Baig.
According to the details of the incident provided, three unidentified gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on Zafar Baig’s car, in which his cousins were also sitting. Due to the attack, Zafar Baig and Imran Baig died on the spot while Nauman Baig is critically injured. He was immediately taken to the DHQ hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The JI city emir and former MPA Arshad Mahmood Baggu and district president Sheikh Attiqur Rehman condemned these killings and termed them to be politically motivated. They claimed that PLM-N activists Sher Khan and union council chairman of Rangpura and his accomplices are behind this brutal attack on JI leaders.
A spokesperson for JI Arif Mahmood Sheikh said both party leaders had become victims of “target killing”.
“The PML-N backed men are behind the brutal act,” he alleged.
Due to these killings, the local lawyer body also came out in protest and staged a rally against the murder of the senior lawyer Mirza Zafar Baig and his cousin. As a sign of protest, the lawyers boycotted court proceedings and observed ‘black day’ against the murders.
The lawyers are demanding that the culprits should be brought to justice at the earliest.
Rangpura SHO Gulzar Khan said a double murder case had been registered against accused Sher Khan and his brothers Shan Khan and Wali Khan on the report of Mirza Shabbir Baig, the uncle of slain JI leaders.
