Muslim teacher sues UK school for wrongful termination
Monday, September 26th, 2016 4:20:45 by fatimaarshadA United Kingdom (UK) based Muslim teacher is suing her former employer after she was sacked from the school. The teacher, identified as 24-year-old Suriyah Bi, claims that she was sacked due to ‘racial discrimination’ over a 9/11 video.
According to the details provided of the incident, Bi had been a teaching assistant for just a week at the Heartlands Academy in Birmingham when an unfortunate incident led to her ‘unfair dismissal’.
Bi told reporters that a class of seventh graders (11 and 12-year-olds) was made to watch an ‘x-rated’ clip in their class which showed the horrors of the attacks on World Trade Center which took place in September, 2001.
Bi further added that the video was shown without the permission of the authorities to a class of around 30 children.
“It raised questions about what safeguards there are in schools to protect children,” she said. “These were children aged 11, of whom many knew little, or nothing, about the 9/11 horror,” the woman added.
“They were subjected to graphic scenes and some were shocked and upset. The video not only showed the plane crashing into the Twin Towers but also showed people committing suicide by jumping to their deaths from the tower blocks,” she said.
After Bi blew the whistle, she was simply asked to leave the school and not come back for work as she had been fired. She said that even though the school is now conducting an investigation into the case, she was dismissed without any fair reason and just on discriminatory basis.
Bi, an Oxford graduate from Birmingham has now filed a lawsuit against the school and seeks justice from the judicial system.
