Pakistan-born British actor sacked from UK soap opera over offensive tweets against India
Monday, September 26th, 2016 9:42:27 by fatimaarshadDue to the rising tension between India and Pakistan, emotions are running high among nationals of both these countries. Due to the same sentiments, a Pakistan-born British actor, by the name of Marc Anwar, lashed out against India for its atrocities against Kashmiris.
Anwar took to Twitter to air his sentiments but that cost him his career as he was sacked from the world’s longest-running soap opera Coronation Street, in which he acted as a Muslim owner of a gym. Anwar had joined the show back in 2014 as a member of the show’s first Muslim family.
Screenshots of Anwar’s tweets were published in Sunday Mirror newspaper after which the tweets went viral.
“Indians killing our Kashmir brothers and sisters,” he wrote after which he suggested that all Pakistani actors should refuse to work in India. He also used abusive language in his tirade and used insulting terms as well.
A spokeswoman for ITV, which broadcasts the show, said: “We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar.
“We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to ‘Coronation Street’ with immediate effect.”
The scenes which have already been filmed of Sharif Nazir, Anwar’s character, will still be aired, however, all future filming will be stopped.
This is not Anwar’s only claim to fame as the actor has also appeared in Hollywood films including Captain Phillips and 51st State.
