India suspends Indus Water Commission talks to mount pressure on Pakistan
Tuesday, September 27th, 2016 11:48:07 by fatimaarshadIn the aftermath of the Uri attacks in Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir, India has decided to suspend the Indus Water Commission talks to further build pressure on Pakistan. India blames Pakistan for the attacks without even solid proof and claims that Pakistan sponsors terrorism on Indian soil.
Now in an attempt to further show its strength, a decision was taken in a meeting presided over by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to suspend the commission talks so that Pakistan faces problems in this area as well.
The Indus Water Treaty (IWT) was signed between then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his Pakistani counterpart President Ayub Khan in September 1960. According to the treaty, water of six rivers-Beas, Sutlej, Ravi, Indus, Jehlum and Chenab- is to be shared between the two countries.
The outcome of the meeting was that no further talks will take place between the two countries on the treaty which means that there will be no meetings as described in the agreement between the commissioners of both the countries.
“If they (India) have decided to do so, there will be no meeting between the commissioners of the two countries that is mandatory to be held once in a year. Similarly, the meetings that are held time to time under the treaty on any issue either on the request of Pakistan or India will not be held now,” Syed Jamat Ali Shah, former IWT commissioner, told a news channel.
It was also decided during the meeting to suspend the 1987 Tulbul navigation project and review it for future use. The attendees of the meeting included National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, the water resources secretary and other senior officers.
Pakistan has not yet responded to this decision.
