Low-caste, pregnant woman lynched in India over dead cow issue
Tuesday, September 27th, 2016 9:43:30 by fatimaarshadA pregnant woman belonging from a low-caste in India was badly beaten by an angry mob after her family refused to clear away a cow carcass from the road, due to a strike against such work. The pregnant woman and her family were badly beaten by people belonging from the upper caste of the social system.
Sangita Ranawasia is five-months pregnant but her attackers did not give two thoughts to the fact before badly beating her. Ranawasia and her family belong from the Dalit caste which is considered to be the lowest caste in the Indian social system and they are delegated with doing the dirty work of the community which includes clearing away dead cow carcasses.
“Six persons of the upper-caste Darbar community were arrested for assault on a pregnant woman and her family members,” deputy police superintendent B A Chavda told AFP.
“The accused are in judicial custody and charges will be framed against them soon,” said Chavda in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district.
The incident took place in a village in the western state of Gujrat on late Friday evening when the Dalits refused to clear away the carcass due to a weeks-long strike. The strike was being observed by the Dalits over the public flogging of four Dalit villagers in July.
Cows are considered sacred in the Hindu culture, and killing them is an offence. Only people from the lower caste of the society are supposed to clear away their dead bodies, once the animals die. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged to stop attacks on the Dalits but the societal norms are hard to change.
Sangita, who is five-months pregnant, is recovering in the hospital and her unborn baby remains unharmed. She and her family has been given protective custody till the time the situation defuses.
