New York aims to bring respect to Muslim citizens through public campaign
Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 12:45:01 by fatimaarshadThe mayor of New York has announced the launch of a major public campaign aimed at fighting Islamophobia and bringing back the respect that Muslim citizens hold. The campaign is aimed at helping the hundreds of thousands of Muslims which are a part of one of the most populated states in America.
The campaign is launched in the wake of the Manhattan bomb attack which was carried out by a radicalized Afghan-American citizen by the name of Ahmad Khan Rahami. Rahami exploded a device in the upscale area of Chelsea in Manhattan, injuring a total of 29 people and spreading further terror in the city.
After the attack, investigators retrieved a handwritten manual from Rahami’s things in which he lauded Al-Qaeda leaders and criticized US wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria.
The campaign will initially use the social media to raise awareness and spread the messages of peace and love under the hashtag #IAmMuslimNYC. After that, a series of workshops are planned which will aim to spread the true message of Islam so that people can differentiate between a terrorist and what Islam is really about.
“Now more than ever, it is important for every New Yorker to stand united as one city and reject hate and violence,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio in a statement.
“We will not tolerate discrimination or violence of any kind and we will not rest until all New Yorkers, including our Muslim brothers and sisters, are treated with the dignity they deserve.”
It is being hoped that this campaign will dispel some of the misinformation and negative perceptions about Islam and help the Muslims living in New York.
