Pemra dismisses Ahamadis’ complaints against two TV channels
Friday, September 30th, 2016 2:58:24 by fatimaarshadPakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (Pemra) dismissed the complaints of the minority Ahmadi community against two TV channels after a crowd broke into the Council of Complaints office and asked the charges to be dropped.
According to the details of the incident provided, Pemra termed these complaints as ‘non-maintainable’ and hence no further action was taken against the two private TV channels.
Initially a complaint was registered against the hosts of New TV’s talk show ‘Harf-i-Raz’ and Channel 92’s show ‘Subh-i-Noor’, by the representatives of the Ahmadi community. The complainants alleged that the hosts of the show ‘provoked’ people to resort to violence against the minority community.
The representatives of the Ahmadi community and the two private TV channels were present in the office of the Council of Complaints when a crowd of people, including clerics, entered the office and asked the authorities to quell the complaints.
Things got out of control at the office and police had to be called to control the situation. “Police rescued representatives of the Ahmadi community who could not record their statements before the council,” a Pemra official told news reporters.
A spokesman of the Jamaat-i-Ahmadiyya group said that the council issued the verdict ‘under pressure’ and did not even hear the complainants’ side of the story. He said that already the lives of this minority group are threatened in this country and the TV shows’ program just added fuel to the fire.
Meanwhile Pemra issued a statement saying that no decision was made under pressure and that the council had unanimously recommended that the complaints were not maintainable.
