Austrian government decides to demolish Hitler’s birth house
Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 4:08:18 by fatimaarshadAfter years of legal battle with the owner of the house where Adolf Hitler was born, the Austrian government finally got its way and now will tear down Hitler’s birth house. According to the details provided, the Austrian government had been trying for years to demolish this house to stop it from becoming a neo-Nazi shrine.
“The Hitler house will be torn down. The foundations can remain but a new building will be erected. It will be used by either a charity or the local authorities,” Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka told Austrian newspaper Die Presse.
The decision to demolish the house was based on the recommendations of an expert committee which had been asked to decide what had to be done with the controversial building.
Hitler’s birth house is a yellow corner building which is located in the quaint northern Austrian town of Braunau Am Inn. The house belonged to a local resident by the name of Gerlinde Pommer. Her family owned the large corner house for more than a century but it had to be evacuated and used for other purposes due to its controversial nature.
The house was previously being used for people with disabilities as the government signed a lease with Pommer in the early 1970s to use it. However, the agreement ended in 2011 when Pommer unexpectedly refused to grant permission for much-needed renovations. She later even rejected a purchase offer made by the interior minister.
A legal battle between the two parties ensued eventually resulting in the government’s favor when the court approved legislation to seize the house from Pommer.
So far, it is still not clear what will be made in the place of Hitler’s birth home after it is torn down.
