No gas for Punjab from 10 PM till morning during extreme winters

Even though winters have not yet started, terrifying news of gas shortage has already been delivered to the citizens of Punjab. According to a government announcement on Monday, the domestic consumers of Punjab province will get no gas supply from 10 PM every night till 5 AM.

This bleak news was delivered to the press by Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. While talking to the press after a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Abbasi said that this step has to be taken because the province is still facing a huge supply deficit.

The minister further elaborated that after the 18th Amendment, it has become very difficult to meet the gas demands of the province from December till February, which are the extreme winter months. He said that in order to meet the shortfall and to ensure that there is no gas shortage during the day, gas supply will remain suspended during the mentioned hours.

According to the latest update, this time around the province will face around 40 percent of gas shortage against the demand, and gas load shedding has already started in different cities. The numbers suggest that Punjab will face a shortfall of around 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas.

Even though Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is being imported, the fuel cannot be provided to households due to its high price. LNG will only be supplied to power, industrial and fertilizer sectors so that these crucial sectors keep operating during the winter months.
