Priyanka Chopra apologizes for controversial magazine cover
Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 4:19:39 by fatimaarshadPriyanka Chopra keeps making headlines on and off, but this time around it’s for all the wrong reasons. The Bollywood celebrity recently came under fire for appearing on the cover of a Conde Nast Traveller magazine, wearing an ‘insensitive top’.
On the cover, Chopra is seen wearing a white vest which has the words, refugee, immigrant, outsider, all crossed-out and the word traveller written beneath.
According to the details provided, the magazine wanted to send a message about addressing xenophobia with labels, but the true message got lost and instead, people took away the wrong message from it.
“I’m really apologetic about sentiments being hurt. I have always been against labels. I am very affected and feel really horrible, but the message has been misconstrued,” Chopra told India’s NDTV news channel.
Talking to the media channel, Chopra said that she was fully aware of the refugee crisis being faced worldwide and that she was actually trying to send out a message to support them. “But it got misconstrued, and I’m sorry people saw it like that and they saw it on me,” she said.
The magazine also apologized for the mistake and clarified that they believed in opening up of borders and breaking down walls as it helped in discovering the world, and for that reason, they made Chopra wear that top. However, the message was misinterpreted by most people.
The cover was seen as insensitive in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis and an opinion piece on Huffington Post voiced the majority’s opinion on the matter; “The lack of choice in removing one’s home and hearth from the familiar to the alien is one fraught with heartbreak and the feeling of being cornered. Very different from picking out the next attractive destination on your bucket list, and surfing through Airbnb for that perfect place to park oneself.”
