Private school apologizes for miscommunication barring Punjabi language on campus
Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 1:37:55 by fatimaarshadThe Beaconhouse School System (BSS) has apologized for a gaffe in its communication circular which was taken out from one of its branches in Sahiwal in which it was stated that students are not to use Punjabi language on campus.
The school management clarified that it never barred its students from speaking Punjabi language but only swear words were prohibited. The confusion simply stemmed from a miscommunication on part of one of the school headmasters who is based in Sahiwal.
BSS came under fire when parents of students studying in the Sahiwal branch received a circular in which among other words, Punjabi language was also barred from being spoken in and outside the campus. However, it was later found out that a headmaster had unintentionally used the wrong words and that the purpose was not to ban Punjabi language.
“Foul language is NOT ALLOWED within and outside the school premises, in the morning, during the school hours and after home time. Foul language includes taunts, abuses, Punjabi [curses] and hate speech.”
This was the message which was intended to be taken out, instead the word ‘curses’ after Punjabi, was mistakenly left out, changing the meaning of the entire sentence.
The man behind this blunder has been identified as Headmaster Jamil Ahmed, who is a teacher at the Sahiwal branch. The BSS management further clarified that he took this step because “cursing in Punjabi is a specific issue with a few older boys at Jamil’s branch in Sahiwal.”
The explanation by the management has calmed down people who were offended by the circular’s content.
