Indian content to be completely banned in Pakistan
Thursday, October 20th, 2016 12:17:26 by fatimaarshadThe Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has passed a notice according to which all Indian content being broadcasted in Pakistan, is to be completely banned.
A notice was issued by PEMRA on Wednesday in which it was stated that a blanket ban is to be imposed on the airing of all Indian content on satellite TV channels and FM radio from October 21 onwards.
A press statement was released by PEMRA in which it was detailed that the ban is being imposed after receiving government response to a summary which PEMRA had forwarded earlier. In response to that summary, the government has delegated complete authority to the media watchdog in the decision making on airing of Indian content in Pakistan.
Since 2006, Pakistani channels have been airing Indian content because of the concession given to India to sell such content to Pakistan.
“Therefore, in its 120th meeting today, the authority decided to withdraw one-sided concession given to India in 2006 by the then Musharraf administration,” read a PEMRA statement issued today.
“The ban on Indian content will take effect from October 21 at 3 pm. The license of TV channels and FM radio stations, found guilty of violating the ban, would be revoked without any show-cause notice,” the statement continued.
Already, actions are being taken against illegal Indian Direct-to-Home (DTH) services and content and raids are conducted against those seen having dish antennas on their rooftops.
The members of the meeting appreciated the efforts of PEMRA in rooting out illegal content and encouraged them to keep doing so.
