Tour bus crash in California leaves 13 people dead

A tour bus smashed into the back of a tractor-trailer, killing at least 13 people and injuring 31 others while on a Southern California highway. The crash took place before dawn on Sunday and so far the exact reason of the accident is still unknown.

According to the details provided by the police, the bus was travelling west on Interstate 10 when the crash took place near Palm Springs, a city east of Los Angeles. The tour bus had left the Red Earth Casino in Salton City, California, and it was headed to Los Angeles when the crash took place.

Immediately the California Highway Patrol (CHP)came to the site of the crash and the highway was blocked from one side.

CHP Chief Jim Abele told reporters the bus actually hit the truck’s trailer from the back side and because of the speed of the bus, the trailer was pushed about 15 feet into the bus. Pictures from the scene of the crash showed the front of the tour bus wedged inside the back of the trailer.

The driver of the bus was also among the 13 people who died in the crash. The 31 people who were injured, sustained minor injuries and they were taken to a hospital immediately after the incident.

Abele told reporters that the bus had been inspected by the CHP in April and at that time, there were no problems found, neither was there any indication of a mechanical problem.

An investigation team is looking into the reason of the accident and a report is expected to be presented soon.
