Father sentenced to death for beating daughter to death over making improper chapaties

Justice was served to a father who had killed his daughter for not making ‘gol roti’ or round flatbread, which is a staple food of Pakistanis. A district and sessions court in Lahore handed the death sentence to the accused, named Khalid, who had committed the crime last year in September.

The judge presiding over the case was Additional District and Sessions Judge, Asghar Khan, who after hearing the argument from both sides, decided to give the death penalty to the accused father. He said that such an individual, who murdered his daughter in cold blood over such a minor dispute, should never be pardoned.

In addition to the death sentence, the court also ordered the convict to submit a fine of Rs 0.5 million.

The incident took place last year in September, in an area of Lahore called Azeem Park. Khalid had asked his 12-year-old daughter to serve him dinner and asked her to make chapaties. The child failed to make round chapaties, infuriating her father. Khalid, along with his son, beat her to death and later dumped her body outside Mayo Hospital.

He later went to the police and filed a case of kidnapping and murder. When the police were investigating the matter, they questioned the girl’s mother, who eventually blurted out that her husband and her son had beaten the girl to death.

A senior police official, at the time of arrest, had said: “Khalid and his son kept shedding crocodile tears to hoodwink the police but the mother took off the lid on how brutally they beat the 12-year old to death.”
