Afghanistan vows to get back its famous ‘portrait girl’
Friday, October 28th, 2016 11:17:48 by fatimaarshadAs Sharbat Gula,- the famous Afghan girl who got featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine in 1985- faces litigation in Pakistan, her home country vows to get her back.
Gula was arrested from an area in Peshawar called Nauthia, for carrying an illegal Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). She has been remanded in judicial custody for the next 14-days, after which her fate will be decided.
Even the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) distanced itself from Sharbat Gula, owing the controversy surrounding her. Speaking to local reporters, UNHCR spokesperson Dunya Aslam said that Gula is an undocumented Afghan refugee whereas UNHCR can only help documented refugees.
The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had been keeping an eye on Gula for the past two years as she initially tried to get fake ID cards for two men and herself.
Even this time around, the authorities recovered a fraudulently acquired Pakistan CNIC and an Afghan identity card from her possession.
After news of Gula’s arrest hit the airwaves, the Afghan government and Awami National Party (ANP) announced their decision to secure her release.
Following reports of Gula’s arrest, the Afghan government and Awami National Party vowed to secure her release. The Afghan ambassador to Pakistan, Omar Zakhilwal talked to the press and said that he would make sure that Gula is returned safely to her homeland.
“I have received information through the media that the Pakistani police have arrested the most famous face in Afghanistan that attracted the attention of the international community,” Zakhilwal said.
“I am confident that she would not only be released as soon as possible but would be repatriated to the country with her family with honour and dignity,” he added.
