Fashion cares: Designer to have Mukhtaran Mai walk the ramp to highlight a cause
Tuesday, November 1st, 2016 12:58:46 by fatimaarshadFashion industry in Pakistan is becoming one of the fastest-growing sectors of the economy and it seems now that the designers are now looking beyond just profits. A local designer based in Karachi has asked Mukhtaran Mai to walk the ramp for her in a bid to raise awareness about women’s struggles in Pakistan.
It is going to be Rozina Munib’s first time at Fashion Pakistan Week (FPW) and instead of playing it safe, she decided to shake things up a little by having Mukhataran as her showstopper.
The idea of having the gang-rape survivor walk the ramp, was pitched to Rozina by her PR strategist Frieha Altaf.
“I told Rozina that the idea could backfire; that people may accuse her of using Mukhtaran as a publicity gimmick,” says Frieha. “But Rozina said that she believed in the cause that she was highlighting and didn’t care what people thought. As a first-timer, I think it was incredibly brave of her.”
Meanwhile Rozina also shared her idea behind bringing Mukhtaran Mai to the ramp. Rozina said that the purpose behind brining Mukhtaran to the ramp is to give courage and hope to other women. She further added that instead of committing suicide or going into depression, Mukhtaran stood up for her rights and raised her voice, giving hope to other victims like her.
Rozina further explained that Mukhtaran will be wearing a traditional wedding dress and will be covering her head like she always does.
“I have no intention of glamourising her into a model for the show,” explains the designer. “She will be wearing the kind of clothes that she would normally wear to a wedding. The purpose behind bringing her to Karachi and making her a part of my show is to tell her story so that it gives courage to other women.
Fashion critics and enthusiasts are already looking forward to tonight’s show in which Mukhtaran will make her debut on the ramp.
