Doctors refuse to operate on infant with heart located outside body
Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 3:59:37 by fatimaarshadA queer and unusual case has put the doctors at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) in a difficult spot as a newborn was brought to the hospital with her heart located outside her tiny body. The case was brought to the hospital by National Institute of Child Health (NICH) as the hospital did not have doctors trained to handle such surgeries.
Due to the complications involved in the case, pediatric cardiologists and surgeons at NICVD refused to admit the baby who has been diagnosed with ectopia cordis-a condition in which the heart is located outside the body.
When approached for comments, the NICVD administration said that the doctors will deliberate over the case and then decide whether to operate on the baby or not, as previously a similar case had been brought to the hospital and the doctors were unable to save the infant. Earlier in May, another infant with ectopia cordis was operated on at NICVD but the baby died shortly after the surgery.
The baby girl diagnosed with ectopia cordis was born on Wednesday at a public hospital in Korangi. Seeing her condition, the doctors of the hospital transferred her to NICH where she was diagnosed.
“The baby was sent to the NICVD for treatment but they did not give a positive response and returned the infant back to us,” Arshad Domki, the deputy director at the NICH told The News.
“She is in the intensive care unit at our hospital where doctors are wondering as to how they’ll save her life,” he added.
The infant’s parents, Muhammad Zubair and Ruskhsana and desperate to save their girl and they have urged the government to form a board of experienced and qualified surgeons from both the public and private sector to treat their child and save her life.
