Heavy smog engulfs Punjab resulting in traffic accidents and motorway closure
Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 12:27:14 by fatimaarshadThe citizens of Punjab thought that fog came early as several cities got covered in thick and heavy vapors in the atmosphere resulting in dimmer visibility. However, what one thought to be fog, is actually smog which is a mixture of pollutants, fumes and vapors in the atmosphere.
Climate experts revealed that Punjab is suffering from a climate change phenomenon which results due to heavy pollution in the atmosphere and cutting down of trees.
The lesser visibility due to the smog resulted in several accidents across Punjab due to which seven people lost their lives. According to the details provided, two cars collided near Chiraghabad Interchange in Faisalabad killing three people and injuring three.
In Hafizabad, five cars collided near Sukheki due to very low visibility, resulting in the death of four people. Several people also got injured and they were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals.
Due to the severe smog and resulting accidents, the motorway was closed down at several locations to avoid further adversities.
The M2 motorway, connecting Rawalpindi and Islamabad to Lahore, was closed from Sial More to Lahore,a spokesman for the Motorway Police said.
The M3 motorway, leading to Faisalabad from Pindi Bhattian, was also closed completely due to zero visibility, he added. From Islamabad to Sial Mor, light fog was observed with visibility 80-150 meters and the section remained open.
On GT Road, the visibility was 80-140 meters as light fog engulfed Kamonki, yet, it too remained open for traffic.
Due to the heavy smog and its short-term ill-effects on health, people, especially children and elders are advised to remain indoors.
