Horrific train accident in Karachi leaves 17 dead, more than 50 injured

The apparent negligence of a train driver resulted in the collision of two trains in Karachi’s Landhi area early Thursday morning, resulting in heavy casualties. At least 17 people were killed and more than 50 are injured after two trains collided at 7:18 AM in Gadafi Town Landhi.

According to the details provided, Zakaria Express collided with the stationary Fareed Express parked at Juma Goth Train Station, when the driver of Zakaria Express ignored a signal. Two bogies of Fareed Express and one bogie of Zakaria Express got completely destroyed due to the accident.

Fareed Express was coming from Lahore to Karachi, whereas Zakaria Express had just left for Multan carrying passengers.

Immediately after the accident, locals rushed to the scene and emergency responders were called to the site of the crash. The bodies of the 17 deceased passengers and 50 injured were taken to the Jinnah Hospital according to Dr. Seemi Jamali, who is head of Emergency Department at Jinnah Hospital. “Many among the injured have head injuries and some are in critical condition,” she added.

Emergency has been declared at Jinnah Hospital, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Civil Hospital.

Due to the horrific accident, severe traffic jam ensued in the area and ambulances carrying the injured got stuck on the roads.

All the scheduled trains from Karachi have been suspended till the time rescue work is completed, whereas trains coming to Karachi have been halted at a station before Landhi.

Minister for Railways, Khawaja Saad Rafique has ordered an inquiry into the accident and he also announced cash compensation for the deceased and injured.
