When one talks or thinks about eating disorders, the picture of an emaciated woman pops up in one’s mind. Since the beginning, eating disorders have always been associated with women; however, it is an equally prevalent problem in men as well.

British pop-star, Zayn Malik opened up about his eating disorder in his recently published autobiography titled ‘Zayn’. The book encapsulates the 23-year-old singer’s life happenings till now in which he also mentions his eating problem.

“Something I’ve never talked about in public before, but which I have come to terms with since leaving the band, is that I was suffering from an eating disorder,” Malik writes in his memoir. “It wasn’t as though I had any concerns about my weight or anything like that. I’d just go for days — sometimes two or three days straight — without eating anything at all.”

“It got quite serious, although at the time I didn’t recognize it for what it was.”

Zayn further explained how everything was going too fast while he was still with the famous band ‘One Direction’ and how he felt a lack of control, which eventually led him to restrict his diet.

In the book, Zayn mentions ‘how ill’ he looked back in 2014 and the realization just hit him when he was writing his book.

According to an expert, more than 30 million Americans struggle with eating disorders at some point in their lives. What’s astonishing is, that out of these 30 million, 10 million of those people are men.

With his revelation, it is being hoped that people will talk more openly about eating disorders in men, and devise ways to beat this evil.
