Friday, November 4th, 2016 1:11:49 by fatimaarshadAt least 17 people have been killed due to smog-related incidents in different parts of Punjab. As the heavily polluted haze continues to engulf different cities of Punjab, health related incidents are also on the rise and hospitals have been put on high alert to deal with the situation.
According to the details provided, at least two people were killed and five others were injured on Friday morning when two trucks collided near Harrappa, Sahiwal. Most of the remaining smog-related deaths also took place in road accidents due to low visibility pertaining to smog.
The motorway from Lahore to Pindi Bhattian and from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad has been reopened after being closed briefly due to low visibility and accidents. Motorway police has advised the public to travel at low speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to avoid accidents.
Low visibility is not the only problem brought on by smog, as people have also been complaining of different health issues brought on by the polluted haze. An increasing number of patients are being observed at hospitals and most of them are either young children or elderly patients. During the last 12 hours alone, as many as 1,200 patients visited hospitals due to smog-related emergencies.
Health advisories are being issued to citizens of Lahore and smog-affected areas, in which people are advised to remain indoors if possible and wear masks if there is a need to go out in the open.
Meanwhile there seems to be no end to this smoggy weather as it can only clear away once there is rain. The meteorology department has revealed that light rains will only take place in upper Punjab and some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, providing temporary improvement in this heavy smog situation.
