Lahore woman seeks court’s approval for daughter’s sex change surgery
Friday, November 18th, 2016 2:11:03 by fatimaarshadGetting one’s gender changed is considered a taboo in our society, yet one mother is taking a stand for her daughter in this regard because she can’t see her in pain. A woman from Lahore is seeking petition from the Lahore High Court, to allow her to get her daughter’s gender changed.
However, things are not as simple as they seem as the LHC Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah has sought the recommendations of the doctors in this regard and adjourned further hearing till November 24.
The mother, identified as Shama Begum requested permission to get the gender of her daughter changed, because none of the doctors are doing it without the court’s approval.
Sex reassignment surgery is carried out on an individual who wants to get their gender changed to that of their identified gender. In this procedure, the transgender person’s physical appearance and function of their existing sexual characteristics are altered.
Shama Begum sought this approval claiming that her 24-year-old daughter was experiencing extremely painful bouts because of her changing gynecological features. The mother further claimed that her daughter was admitted to the hospital where several tests were carried out to ascertain the reason for the pain.
Ultrasounds and further tests confirmed that the woman was undergoing sexual transition and she needed urgent care. Despite this revelation, the doctors refused to perform her sexual reassignment surgery fearing legal action.
A Punjab government law officer submitted that the ultrasound reports attached with the petition did not clarify the woman needed the sex change operation. The judge has therefore asked the woman’s counsel to present doctor’s recommendations in written form during the November 24 hearing.
