Another plea moved in court to make Gen Raheel Sharif a field marshal

It seems that people do not want General Raheel Sharif to retire from service just yet as the Supreme Court has been asked yet again to confer the title of field marshal on the soon to be ex-Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif.

This is the second time that such an appeal has been made as an earlier attempt to make Gen Raheel a field marshal was quashed by the court as the case was not ruled in the petitioner’s favor.

This time around, the petition was moved by Sardar Adnan Saleem Khan Mazari, who is an executive member of the District Bar Association Rawalpindi. According to him, Gen Raheel should be given the title of field marshal for his services to protect national security and safeguarding the frontiers of Pakistan by successfully launching Operation Zarb-i-Azb against the militants.

On Oct 18, the Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench had rejected a similar plea. Mazari does not seem to agree with the previous outcome as he argues that the judgment was “unlawful and unconstitutional as it was rendered without taking into consideration the merit of the post which was globally recognized and Pakistan was no exception among the comity of nations”.

In his appeal, Mazari argued that this is not the first time that such a title will be conferred on a serving general as he stated that the late President Muhammad Ayub Khan had also served at the same post, which showed that such posts existed in Pakistan.

Mazari pleaded that Gen Raheel had shown exemplary leadership and had launched successful operations like Zarb-i-Azb which significantly brought down terrorism. He also recounted several other successful ventures of the Army Chief like CPEC project and the formulation of National Action Plan.

Mazari argued that due to these achievements, Gen Raheel Sharif should be made the field marshal.
