Medical board unable to assess paralyzed Larkana student due to absence of a doctor
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 1:25:46 by fatimaarshadThe special medical board which was constituted on the directives of Sindh Chief Minister to assess the condition of Larkana Cadet College student who suffered severe torture, could not carry out their task on Monday due to the absence of a board member.
According to the details provided, a 10-member board was scheduled to examine the student, Muhammad Ahmed Hussain, on Monday at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) at 11:30 am, but the scheduled check-up had to be postponed because Dr. Umer Farooq, a leading END surgeon of the Civil Hospital Karachi, was abroad.
Even though the rest of the board members had insisted on carrying on with the check-up, the boy’s father, declined saying that all the panel members need to be present in order to evaluate his son.
“The board could not meet because of the absence of Dr Farooq,” said a senior official. “It could not examine as the boy’s father wanted it should have all 10 members.”
It was learnt that Dr. Umer Farooq will return from his trip on Wednesday and the earliest the board could meet after that was on Thursday.
The board is headed by the CHK’s neurosurgeon Junaid Ashraf. With Dr Jamal Raza, director, National Institute of Child Health, convener of the board, its other members are: Prof Lal Rehman, neurosurgeon, JPMC; Dr Muhammad Usman, ENT surgeon, JPMC; Dr Iqbal Ahmed Moghira and Dr Prem Chand of the Aga Khan University Hospital, Dr Jalil Qadir, director, CB Lab; Prof Muhammad Hasan Shaikh and Dr Alam Ibrahim Siddiqui of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana.
The board will not only ascertain the causes behind the boy’s injuries, but will also make recommendations regarding his treatment options.
Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah has announced that the government will be bearing all the expenses of Ahmed’s treatment. An inquiry committee has also been formed which will bring the accused teachers to justice.
