Patient sues PIMS hospital for Rs. 15.5 million
Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016 6:52:50 by fatimaarshadA patient sued Islamabad’s famous PIMS hospital for Rs. 15.5 million in damages because she was misdiagnosed and mistreated for years. An Islamabad sessions court has issued arrest warrants for a rheumatologist connected with the case after he failed to appear before the court to respond to the patient’s complaint against him and other doctors from the same hospital.
According to the details of the incident provided, a patient by the name of Hajira Bibi went to the PIMS hospital for the first time in November 2012 for her ill-health. She consulted doctors at the PIMS hospital over the next five to six months after which she was referred to an infection specialist. The specialist in turn referred her to the pulmonology department for tuberculosis treatment. After that she was referred to rheumatology department, where she claimed that Dr. Rehman treated her for two years. After Dr. Rahman left the hospital, she continued showing to another rheumatologist.
Despite such extensive treatment, Hajira Bibi continued to suffer from ill health so she showed herself to another doctor, who diagnosed her with leprosy within 20 days. This diagnosis was confirmed by another leprosy hospital in Rawalpindi. After being diagnosed, Hajira Bibi started getting better with the right treatment.
After this, Hajira Bibi registered a formal complaint against the hospital for failing to diagnose her with the correct disease which was afflicting her during the period and “extorted money through ill advice and irrelevant tests”.
In her complaint, she accused the hospital and four of its doctors of maltreatment, misdiagnosis, unfair trade practices, and corruption. She requested the court to order the hospital to give her a refund of Rs1.5 million, which she says she spent on doctors’ fees, tests, and related expenses. She has also demanded Rs10 million in compensation “for mental torture and agony, and physical and health loss” which she claims to have suffered.
The hospital and three of the accused doctors submitted their reply, denying all allegations made in the complaint. “No right of the complainant has been infringed and she is not entitled to claim any compensation or damages,” reads their reply submitted to the court.
Meanwhile Dr. Rahman has still not submitted a reply and the court has issued an arrest warrant for him.
