People of different faiths and ethnicities are being targeted across America by white supremacists ever since Donald Trump became the elected president of the United States. Even though such hate crimes were prevalent even before Trump’s win, they have been incited because of his stance on such matters.

On Sunday, a serving New York police officer was targeted by a white male because she was wearing a head covering and asked to ‘go back to your country’. The police officer, identified as Aml Elsokary, held a press conference along with her seniors and detailed the whole incident in front of the press.

In the same meeting, New York City officials vowed to swiftly find and prosecute any and all hate-crime suspects to end this growing menace.

“If anybody’s thinking in New York City about engaging in this type of behavior, just rest assured that you will be identified, you will be arrested, you will be charged accordingly,” Police Commissioner James O´Neill told reporters.

According to the details of the incident provided, Elsokary, a native New Yorker and Muslim, was walking with her teenage son on Saturday in Brooklyn’s Bay Ridge neighborhood. Since she was off-duty, she wasn’t wearing her uniform. While walking there, a man lunged at her son and accused both mother and son of being associated with the militant Islamic State group. He then threatened to slit Elosokary’s throat and asked her to go back to her country.

The man identified as Christopher Nelson, was arraigned on Monday on a top count of felony menacing in the second degree hate crime.
