The police on Thursday lodged a case against the owners and management of Regent Plaza Hotel. The complaint was lodged on the basis of an investigative report which held the hotel administration and civil defense responsible for the tragedy.
According to the findings of the report, there were no trained personnel at the hotel for extinguishing the fire and all the emergency exits were also closed. The fire alarms which were installed in the hotel also did not meet the quality standards, further exacerbating the problem.
In addition to that, when the fire actually broke out and people tried opening the windows to jump out, there were no arrangements in place to open the windows even. The hotel also lacked prominent emergency exits or folding ladders according to the report filed by the police.
The detailed report was presented to Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, who is expected to issue his further orders regarding the case.
The Karachi Regent Plaza fire resulted in the death of 12 people and injury of more than a hundred. The hotel, which is located at Shahrah-e-Faisal, was completely engulfed in fire which started late at night.
According to sources familiar with the case, the fire broke out at 3 am in the kitchen which was located in the basement of the hotel and it traveled up through the air conditioning ducts, engulfing the entire hotel and causing the deaths and destruction.
