Indian doctor agrees to operate on world’s heaviest woman pro bono

An Egyptian woman, who is believed to be the world’s heaviest woman, will be flown to India for weight reduction surgery after an Indian doctor agreed to operate on her free of cost.

The woman, identified as 36-year-old Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, weighs a whopping 500 kilograms and has remained confined to her bed for years due to her weight issue. When Indian surgeon Muffazal Lakdawala learnt of her plight, he agreed to carry out the procedure free of cost. However, there was another hurdle as El Aty’s visa request was initially rejected.

Hearing this, Lakdawala sent out a tweet to India’s foreign minister Sushma Swaraj, urging her to intervene and help in this case. Swaraj, who herself is admitted at the hospital for a liver transplant, responded within hours and promised to assist El Aty. She was granted visa in the next few days and is now all set to fly to India for her weight reduction surgery.

“She is a bundle of diseases. She needs surgery urgently,” the surgeon said of Abd El Aty, 36, who is expected to fly to the western city of Mumbai next week for the procedure.

“Her sister said she hasn’t left her room in 25 years. I just thought ‘Oh my god, I have to help. I’ll do it pro bono, no problem’.”

Lakdawala provided further details about the case, saying that he was approached by El Aty’s sister two months ago, urging him to provide immediate medical attention to El Aty. He was further told by El Aty’s family that as a child she was diagnosed with a condition known as elephantiasis which causes the limbs and other body parts to swell, leaving the patient immobile.

Later she suffered a stroke and was rendered bedridden, triggering a series of ailments including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep apnea.

Lakadwala said that even though he has performed many surgeries, he is still nervous about this one and he hopes that it will go smoothly.
