Messi’s youngest fan, a 5-year-old Afghan boy, finally got to meet the football champ after a meeting was arranged between the two in Qatar.

Martaza Ahmadi made headlines in the beginning of this year after he was photographed wearing an improvised Argentinian jersey made from a plastic bag, with Messi’s name and the number 10 scribbled on it.

Since then, different organizations had been trying to arrange a meeting between Ahmadi and Lionel Messi. The meeting was ultimately arranged by the organizing committee of the 2022 World Cup.

The meeting took place in Qatar where Messi was with his Barcelona teammates to play a friendly match against Al Ahli on Tuesday. Murtaza flew to Qatar from Afghanistan to meet his idol.

For the meeting, Murtaza was again seen wearing a Barcelona jersey.

“I’m very happy to have met my hero. It is a dream for me,” said Murtaza, in quotes supplied by the World Cup organising committee.

The five-time world player of the year held his young fan’s hands at the team hotel before picking him up and posing for photographs. The Afghan boy, who is now 6, will also walk out onto the field with Messi before Tuesday’s match.

Murtaza became an internet sensation when his picture surfaced wearing a plastic jersey and playing near his home in eastern Ghazni province. Days after the picture surfaced, Messi himself sent the boy signed Barcelona and Argentina jerseys to him and expressed his wish to one day meet him.
