Friday, December 16th, 2016 6:23:57 by fatimaarshadThe father of Samia Shahid, who was killed in the name of honor back in July this year, has been released on bail. The Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi Bench on Thursday accepted the bail plea of Chahdhary Shahid and released him.
The court ordered the applicant to submit a surety bond of Rs 200,000 for his release as bail was granted due to insuffienct evidence by the prosecution.
Samia Shahid was a British national of Pakistani descent who had been allegedly killed by her first husband and father, after she refused to listen to her family and married another man after getting a divorce from her first husband. Samia was living with her second husband in Dubai but she had been asked by her family in Pakistan to visit them immediately on the false pretext of her father’s ill health.
Upon arriving in Pakistan, Samia was murdered by her first husband with the assistance of her family in her native village near Dina.
Initially, her family claimed that Samia died due to cardiac arrest. However, investigations revealed that she had been strangulated after being intoxicated.
Samia’s father and ex-husband, Chaudhry Shakil, were in the Jhelum jail for the last few months. Police arrested them in August in light of the forensic evidence which proved that Samia had been murdered.
On the complaint of her first husband, Mangla police had registered a case of Samia’s murder against five members of her family including her parents, ex-husband, a sister and a cousin. Her mother and sister fled the country back to UK to avoid being arrested.
