PTCL data, cellular services affected by cable breakdown
Monday, December 26th, 2016 11:26:42 by fatimaarshadUsers of PTCL and some cellular service providers in Pakistan faced major issues as one of the telecom company’s major fiber optic cables reportedly broke down. The issue took place around mid-afternoon on Monday and till now restoration work is still going on.
Due to the outage, internet subscribers of different cellular companies also faced difficulties. Since Pakistan Railway’s e-ticketing system also relies on PTCL broadband service, even that was affected and the whole system was brought to a halt.
PTCL and Ufone subscribers in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar reportedly faced major issues as the network services in these cities were downgraded owing to the breakdown. Ufone is a wholly owned subsidiary of PTCL and both companies use the same cable to provide internet services.
According to the details provided so far, internet and broadband outages were also confirmed in Mandi Bahauddin, Rajanpur, Multan, Jhelum, Hyderabad and Larkana.
A spokesman of PTCL reported that it was a multiple cable cut at different places which caused the breakdown and not just from one place. He also said that authorities are now investigating the cause.
“The restoration work has started, its being carried out at areas near Karachi and Hub,” the spokesperson added.
So far a timeline has not been provided regarding when the service will be restored in all areas.
In a tweet from the official PTCL Twitter account, the company said: “We are currently facing major outage on our network, due to which internet service to some of our users have been affected.”
“Our teams are working on-ground to restore the service as soon as possible. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”
Due to the breakdown, PTCL landline services have not been affected and they are working fine across the country.
