Obama ousts Russian spies, slaps tough sanctions on Russia after election hack
Friday, December 30th, 2016 3:16:32 by fatimaarshadIn what appears to be the strongest reaction against Russia by President Obama for the country’s alleged involvement in US presidential elections, he has ordered Russian spies to be evicted from the US and imposed sanctions on two Russian intelligence agencies.
It has been alleged by US intelligence agencies that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally directed efforts to intervene in the 2016 US election process by hacking democrats’ email accounts.
Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, who was a very strong candidate for the 2016 presidential slot, suffered the blow as her emails were exposed and it showed that she had breached security protocol as part of the government.
These new revelations have put a further dent in already strained US-Russia relations which have been deteriorating recently due to Ukraine and Syria issue.
“These actions follow repeated private and public warnings that we have issued to the Russian government, and are a necessary and appropriate response to efforts to harm US interests in violation of established international norms of behaviour,” Obama said in a statement from vacation in Hawaii.
It is widely believed that if the leaked email issues would not have surfaced, Hillary Clinton could have easily won the elections. Therefore Russia appears to be behind president-elect Donald Trump’s win.
Trump has repeatedly praised Putin and nominated people seen as friendly toward Russia to senior administration posts. Therefore it is not clear whether he would seek to roll back the measures against Russian once he takes office on January 20.
