People in LA wake up to ‘Hollyweed’ sign

On the first day of 2017, residents of California’s film-and-television hub, woke up to the famous hillside sign altered as ‘Hollyweed’. The iconic, white-letter sign which usually reads as ‘Hollywood’, was altered by a prankster overnight in honor of marijuana.
The sign sits atop Los Angeles’ famous Mount Lee, and it has been there since 1923. Apparently, late into the New Year’s night, an unidentified person altered the sign and later fled the scene.
City surveillance cameras showed footage of someone dressed in black at about 3 am local time, and police believe that this was the suspect behind the defacement of the famous sign.
According to the details provided by the police, material similar to trap was placed over the two Os to make them appear as Es in the ‘Hollywood’. Currently, park rangers are assessing how to safely remove the material so that it does not damage the original sign.
Police officials also reported that till now there are no suspects but if the person is caught, he or she will be charged with misdemeanor trespassing.
Recreational marijuana is legal for adults in California after a bill was easily approved by California voters on Nov. 8.
Rapper Snoop Dogg, who is a noted cannabis user, tweeted a picture of the altered sing on Sunday and said; “#hollyweHed – that’s where I get my mail. #merryjane.”
The famous Hollywood sign used to be a popular spot for tourists and hikers who would be able to walk up to the sign and take pictures. However recently, a fence has been put up around the sign and accessing the area is difficult.
