Turkey nightclub carnage leaves 39 dead, manhunt continues for suspect
Monday, January 2nd, 2017 12:46:08 by fatimaarshadThe year 2017 did not start really well for Turkey as a nightclub shooting left 39 people dead and several others seriously injured. As people at a famous nightclub in Turkey were ringing in the new year, a gunman entered the club and opened fire.
According to the details provided, the incident took place at Reina nightclub which is located on the shore of the famous Bosphurous River. An unidentified shooter entered the night club at around 1:15 am local time, after killing a policeman and a civilian at the club’s entrance.
He then opened indiscriminate fire at the party-goers killing several people on the spot. At the time of the shooting, around 700 people were present in the club.
Due to the shooting, a lot of people panicked and jumped into the pool. A lot of those people were saved.
According to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, around 20 victims have been identified so far. Out of those victims, 15 were foreigners and five were Turks. Efforts are underway to identify the remaining victims and the injured.
Soylu also told reporters that the assailant managed to escape and now a major manhunt is underway to capture him. So far no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
Turkey has been a victim of suicide bombing and attacks as the country deals with the onslaught of Kurdish militants. In 2016, the country experienced one of the highest numbers of suicide attacks.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan shared his thoughts on this sad incident and said that the carnage sought to sow chaos and undermine the peace of the country. He urged that Turkey would never bow to the threats posed by these attackers.
