NYC train derails during rush hour injuring more than 100 commuters
Thursday, January 5th, 2017 3:39:50 by fatimaarshadIn a second train accident in just under five months in New York City, more than 100 commuters got injured as a train derailed at a downtown Brooklyn terminal on Wednesday morning.
The Long Island Railroad train, loaded with morning commuters, derailed at the Atlantic Terminal at around 8:30 am, local time, according to the New York City Fire Department.
Thankfully, none of those injured are in a life-threatening situation and out of the 100 injured, only 11 people were sent to the hospital while the rest were treated on the spot.
According to the details of the incident provided, the train was coming from the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway, when it failed to stop on time and hit a bumping block. The speed at which it hit the block was fairly slow, due to which major damage was avoided. The front two carriages of the six-carriage train were badly damaged.
Deputy Assistant Chief Dan Donoghue held a press conference after the accident in which he provided brief details of the crash. He said that investigations are going on into the cause of the crash but the initial evidence suggests that the accident took place probably because of the engineer’s fault.
“At that speed, it’s pretty much the locomotive engineer’s responsibility to stop the train,” he said.
This is the second major train accident to take place in New York as in late September, a New Jersey Transit train crashed into a terminal in Hoboken, killing one woman and injuring more than 114 people.
