KP woman succumbs to injuries inflicted by in-laws

A woman belonging from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s city Nowshera, died in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) after sustaining massive injuries inflicted by her in-laws. The woman was badly beaten and later set on fire by her in-laws. She was brought to PIMS after her condition started deteriorating but despite the best medical care, she could not survive.

The domestic violence victim was later buried in the ancestral village of Dagi Jadeed, after her funeral which took place in Nowshera.

According to the details provided, the woman was married to a man named Rahat Sher for the past nine years and she had four children. The youngest of her children is a 10-month-old girl.

The incident which ultimately took her life, took place on Dec 18, when her brother-in-law, his wife, her parents-in-law and a few other relatives ganged up against her for a complaint which she had registered against them with the police. Her in-laws first badly beat her and later doused her with petrol and set her on fire.

An FIR was registered against them at the relevant Azakhel police station in Nowshera on Dec 23. The case was registered on the basis of the statement which was recorded by the burns victim after she gained consciousness at the Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar, where she was being treated before shifting to PIMS.

The victim’s brother, Zahoor, told reporters that his family was very optimistic that his sister will recover but unfortunately that did not happen.

“We’re hopeful that she would survive seeing improvement of her condition during the last couple of days. However, she began facing breathing problem yesterday and could not survive,” said Zahoor Khan.

The relevant police investigation officer, Akhtar Hussain Khan, told reporters that Section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code had been included in the FIR of the case.

Initially, the suspects were charged under sections 114 (presence of abettor when offence is committed), 147 (rioting) and 336-B (causing hurt by use of corrosive substance) of the PPC.
