Cash compensation announced for heirs of PK-661 victims
Thursday, January 19th, 2017 10:30:16 by fatimaarshadPakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced on Thursday that it will give out financial compensation to all the legal heirs of PK-661 crash victims. The decision comes at a time when the airline is already going through a financial crisis.
According to the details provided, PIA has announced that it is ‘ready to pay compensation’ of Rs. 5 million to the legal heirs of the crash victims.
PK-661 crashed near Havelian while it was on its way to Islamabad from Chitral on December 7. All the passengers and the crew members were killed in the crash and so far investigations have not revealed a definite cause of the crash.
PIA is required to pay financial compensation to the heirs of crash victims as it has to comply with the requirements of the Carriage by Air Act 2012. In a statement, PIA said that the amount of Rs. 5 m is exclusive of ‘interim/advance payments in the amount of Rs. 500,000 paid to each bereaved family’.
In order to claim the amount, legal heirs will have to bring succession certificates and where applicable, guardianship certificates regarding property of the minor(s) legal heirs of the deceased and any other relevant documents.
So far there has been no headway made regarding the cause of the crash. On January 12, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) shared its findings from the black box data which was recovered from PK-661. It was revealed through the data that one of the engines of the plane was still working when it crashed and despite that, no effort was made to land it.
