Canadian student charged in connection with Quebec mosque shooting
Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 1:28:16 by fatimaarshadA Canadian student, who studied political science at Laval University, has been charged with murder in the Quebec mosque shooting which resulted in the death of six Muslim worshippers and injury of eight others.
The attacker, identified as Alexdandre Bissonnette, was known to have nationalist sympathies and hatred towards Muslims. On Monday, he was charged with six counts of premeditated murder and five counts of attempted murder, as five of the injured victims are in critical condition.
Bissonnette made a brief court appearance on Monday during which he was charged with his crimes. According to authorities, more indictments are expected to come later.
So far a motive for the killing spree has not been established but it is most probably going to be classified as hate-crime.
Meanwhile it was reported that Bissonnette is a Quebec nationalist and anti-feminist, who also recently ‘liked’ US President Donald Trump’s Facebook page. He was also a supporter of French far-right politician Marine Le Pen, who openly condemns Muslims.
Initially it was reported that two masked-men had opened fire at the worshippers at a mosque in Quebec during the Sunday night prayers. However, it was later revealed that the second person detained has only been questioned as a witness.
It was reported that after carrying out the killing spree, Bissonnette surrendered 20 kilometers outside the city after calling an emergency services hotline and revealing his location.
All those who died were dual Canadian nationals and mostly belonged to North African countries.
