Government gives Uber, Careem, 15 days to fulfill requirements
Wednesday, February 1st, 2017 4:21:31 by fatimaarshadJust a day after news broke that Uber and Careem might be declared illegal by the government and may be banned from providing their service, it turns out that the ban may not yet take place.
Chief Minister Punjab, Shehbaz Sharif has allowed the mobile-application taxi service providers 15 days to get registered and fulfill all the requirements. Till that time, the companies will continue to provide their services to the masses.
People were largely upset at the prospect of losing the services of both these companies as they have made public transportation easy, affordable and safe for them. Twitter erupted with Tweets in support of Uber and Careem and condemning the government on banning their services.
According to the latest details, the Punjab Transport Department will be in contact with both Uber and Careem to fulfill the legal requirements so that these companies can continue to operate. In the meantime, the Punjab Excise Department has called for the records of both the companies so that they can be evaluated. All such mobile-app based taxi providers have been asked to comply with the law of the land.
The Sindh Transport Minister, Nasir Shah, said that so far no order has been given banning the services of Uber and Careem.
“These companies are indeed servicing the public,” he acknowledged, adding that it is the government’s obligation to make these companies comply with the law.
Careem Managing Director Junaid Iqbal has said that his company has already applied for route permits in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and he urged the government to help such companies comply with relevant laws.
