India helps in reuniting five-year-old boy with Pakistani mother
Monday, February 6th, 2017 12:49:55 by fatimaarshadPakistan sent a message of thanks to India on Sunday for helping in the safe return of a five-year-old boy, Iftikhar Ahmed, who had been kidnapped and trafficked to India by his own father. The boy was reunited with his mother, Rohina Kiani, who is a Pakistani national and who had married a man from Indian-held Kashmir (IHK).
The boy was handed over to his mother by border officials in the two of Wagah in Punjab on Saturday evening. The return was made possible because of a long legal battle by his mother, seeking his return from his father, Gulzar Ahmad Tantray.
While talking to reporters, Kiani said that she is a resident of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and that she had married her husband after he crossed the de facto border into Kashmir while an insurgency at its peak in IHK. The two lived in AJK but once Ahmed was born, Tantray wanted the entire family to return to his home village in IHK.
When Kiani refused to heed to his wishes, Tantray absconded with his son to Indian in March 2016. Since then Kiani started a search for her son and pursued a custody case in an Indian court through the Pakistani embassy in New Delhi. Luckily, the court ruled in her favor and she was able to get custody of her son.
While talking to reporters on Sunday, Kiani said that she was extremely happy and was willing to forgive her estranged husband.
“I’m extremely happy and unable to express my joy. I pardon my husband and hope he will also join us soon to live with us here in Pakistan,” she told AFP.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to New Delhi Abdul Basit also thanked Indian authorities for their help in the matter.
“We are thankful to Indian authorities for their cooperation in this humanitarian matter,” he tweeted.
