Tourist bus overturns in Taiwan killing 32 people
Tuesday, February 14th, 2017 12:26:53 by fatimaarshadOne of the worst accidents in the history of Taiwan took place on Monday night resulting in the death of 32 people and severe injury of 12 others. The bus was carrying elderly local tourists home from a trip to the seasonal cherry blossom fields when it careered off a highway on Monday night, killing these many people in the island’s worst road accident in decades.
According to the details of the incident provided, the Taiwanese passengers had been returning home from a trip to a farm in the central region of Taichung when the bus slid off the motorway in the capital Taipei. Till now it is not clear why the bus crashed but investigations are underway to uncover the cause.
This tragic accident comes just a year after another road accident in which 25 Chinese holidaymakers were killed. These series of accidents are putting a dent in Taiwan’s safety record.
According to the local media reports, the top of the bus had been torn-off due to the impact of the accident and its occupants were tossed onto the roadside.
“The passengers are all Taiwanese and mostly older people,” said Chen Chih-min from Taipei City fire department, which confirmed the crashed vehicle was a sightseeing tour bus.
The bus was carrying a total of 44 passengers, out of which 32 died on the spot while 12 are still being treated in hospitals.
A video footage reported to be from a car behind the bus, shows the ill-fated vehicle heading towards a bend in the road then disappearing off the edge of the highway. Police are still trying to decipher whether the bus was speeding at that time.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Lin Chuan gave their condolences and instructed officials to uncover the cause of the accident at the earliest.
