Kanye West breaks stereotypes by casting hijab-wearing Muslim model for fashion show
Thursday, February 16th, 2017 9:48:14 by fatimaarshadKanye West keeps making headlines from time to time due to his bizarre behavior, however this time around, he is making news for something positive. The rap star turned fashion designer recently held a fashion show during the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) and he put a hijab-wearing Somali-American model on the catwalk, defying the fashion norms.
The Muslim model Kanye chose for the occasion was 19-year-old Halima Aden. The Somalia born Muslim model walked in front of West’s wife and reality star Kim Kardashian and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The crowd was quite surprised by Aden’s debut on the catwalk on day seven of the NYFW.
Aden was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and is now a US citizen. She first made headlines last year for being the first woman to compete in a Miss Minnesota beauty pageant in a hijab. Kanye’s show will give Aden a much bigger platform and is sure to propel her towards more success.
Style bible Vogue said her appearance made her the show´s “most talked-about new face” and credited her with starting a “meaningful conversation” by proudly representing Muslim women at fashion week.
While talking to reporters, Aden told them about the hardships she has to face in order to get work which conforms to her religious standards. However, she said that the experience so far has been very positive for her.
“My goal is to send a message to Muslim women and young women everywhere that it´s okay to break stereotypes and be yourself,” the magazine´s website quoted her as saying.
“I haven´t received any pressure to be anything other than myself,” she told Vogue, “and for that, I am so grateful.”
