Hina Shahnawaz murder case: Four suspects arrested for ‘honor killing’
Tuesday, February 21st, 2017 4:26:56 by fatimaarshadPolice have arrested four people in connection with an honor killing case which took place in Kohat earlier this month. The victim was a 27-year-old woman, who was the sole bread-winner of her family and was looking after her mother, brother’s widow and child and her sister and her children because their father had committed suicide.
According to the details of the case provided, Shahnawaz belonged from a conservative family, but she had completed her education and got a job as an accountability officer at a non-government organization (NGO). Her extended family did not approve of her working, and had asked her to quit several times. However, Shahnawaz stayed strong in the face of all these objections and continued to work and provide for her family.
On Feb 6, Shahnawaz was murdered at her own house and the assailants managed to escape. After her murder, her sister Farheen got an FIR registered at the police station against members of her own family.
As many as eight suspects are wanted for Shahnawaz’s murder, out of which four have been arrested by the police. The prime suspect, identified as Zulfiqar Ali, was nabbed from Rawalpindi while Shah Alam, Riaz Ali and a policeman, Maisam Ali, were apprehended in Kohat.
The four suspects were remanded into police’s custody by local magistrate for a week, while search is still on for the remaining four suspects.
According to Operations SP Tariq Mehmood, all the suspects were Shahnawaz’s close relatives who did not want her to work. He said that the case was one of honor killing.
‘If a jirga is held to solve the case then the police will itself fight the case and ensure that the suspects are punished’, said Mehmood.
