Explosion in Lahore’s Defense market kills five
Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 1:13:45 by fatimaarshadJust ten days after a powerful suicide bombing killed 11 people and injured 83 others on Lahore’s Mall Road area, another explosion rocked a busy shopping area in the city.
According to the details of the incident provided, a blast occurred outside a restaurant in Lahore’s Z-block area just before noon. Due to the explosion, five people are confirmed dead while 21 others have been injured.
Initially it was being said that the blast occurred due to a malfunctioning generator. Even the Government of Punjab released a tweet from its official Twitter account clarifying that the explosion occurred due to a generator blast.
However, it is now being speculated that the blast was due to bombing. A bomb disposal squad is now present in the area and the entire market is being evacuated.
The injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital whereas emergency has been imposed in all the hospitals in Lahore.
Due to the blast, windows of nearby restaurants and shops got shattered and several cars and motorbikes were also damaged.
According to eye witnesses’ reports, there were two men who were just standing and witnessing the entire scene. When authorities approached them, they tried to run away because of which they were arrested and have now been transferred to the Defense police station.
Just a few days ago, the same market was evacuated by law enforcement agencies after a bomb threat. However, the market was cleared at that time and businesses resumed their operations.
A day earlier, Pakistan’s military announced the launch of a new nationwide military offensive called Radd-ul-Fisaad to rid the country of remaining terrorists.
