British police arrest third suspect in match-fixing scandal
Friday, February 24th, 2017 1:06:28 by fatimaarshadThe British police announced on Thursday that a third suspect had been arrested in connection with the international cricket spot-fixing probe. So far the identity of the suspect has not been released.
On Thursday, a statement was released by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in which it was released that the officers had arrested a British man in his thirties in the morning in the Sheffield area. The arrest was made in connection with the investigations going on regarding the spot-fixing of cricket matches.
The suspect was later released on bail till the time further investigations were conducted.
The NCA has been working closely with the Pakistan Cricket Board and International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption units in order to uncover the culprits behind corruption in cricket.
Earlier this month, the NCA had arrested two men, also in their 30s, in connection with the probe. Both these men were bailed till April.
On Saturday, Pakistani cricket officials charged Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif for spot-fixing in a corruption probe that threatens to tarnish the reputation of Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Both the players have been accused of meeting a bookie for spot-fixing in the PSL matches. However, both Sharjeel and Latif have denied these charges and maintain that they were set-up. If found guilty, both the players could face up to a life ban from international and domestic cricket under Pakistan Cricket Board corruption rules.
Another player, Nasir Jamshed, was also suspended over his alleged influence over the two players. He was arrested in London last week but was granted bail until April.
The probe still continues and there are chances that other players can also be found guilty of corruption charges.
