‘Most awkward’ Oscar’s blunder causes huge confusion over Best Picture win
Monday, February 27th, 2017 12:54:02 by fatimaarshadThe 89th Academy Awards were full of surprises, shocking for some, as there was a mix-up in the Best Picture category win. An incorrect announcement led the cast and crew of La La Land to think that they had won the Oscars, when in fact, Moonlight had won in the Best Picture category.
The mix-up has been termed as the ‘Most awkward’ blunder in the history of the Academy Awards and now Twitter is having a field day reacting to this news.
The mix-up occurred when the presenters for Best Picture, Hollywood veterans, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, read out the wrong winner while announcing the winner for the category at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Dunaway declared La La Land as the winner, when in fact, Moonlight had won that award. Co-presenter Beatty had to return to the stage in order to rectify the embarrassing mistake.
La La Land’s cast and crew had already come up to the stage and were half-way through their acceptance speech when the error was corrected, leading to more embarrassment for the team.
“I opened the envelope,” he said. “And it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”
La La Land’s producer Jordan Horowitz held aloft the correct award slip for the cameras to prove that Moonlight had indeed won.
“This is not a joke,” he said. “Moonlight has won best picture.”
He and his team then hurriedly left the stage.
After that, the winning team, cast and crew of Moonlight came to the stage and accepted their award.
