Reason for wrong Oscar winner announcement uncovered: PwC employee responsible
Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 1:37:58 by fatimaarshadFor the first time in the history of the Academy Awards there was a wrong announcement of the winner in the Best Picture category and since then, people have been trying to find out who was at fault.
It appears that now the reason has been uncovered and a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) employee is responsible for handing out the wrong envelope to the announcers of the category winner.
On Sunday, La La Land was mistakenly declared as the Best Picture for the year when in fact, the real winner in the category was Moonlight. It has been discovered that PwC employee, accountant Brian Cullinan, who was tweeting shortly before the announcement backstage, gave presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway the wrong envelope for the Best Picture category winner.
It took PwC three hours to find out the real cause behind the mix-up. “Cullinan mistakenly handed the backup envelope for Actress in a Leading Role instead of the envelope for Best Picture” to Beatty and Dunaway, PwC said.
“Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner.”
PwC then apologized for the mistake but experts say that this gaffe has really tarnished the reputation of the firm. PwC has been overseeing the Academy Awards balloting for the past 83 years.
According to reports, Cullinan had just posted a picture of Emma Stone with her award, on his Twitter account. However, the picture was later deleted but a cashed copy of it was available.
It was a very embarrassing situation for the cast and crew of La La Land, who had already come on stage to receive their award and were halfway through their acceptance speech when someone told them about the mix-up and the real winner. Eventually, La La Land’s producer, Jordan Horowitz, had to clarify that the real winner was Moonlight.
