Monday, March 6th, 2017 10:19:39 by fatimaarshadAn Indian Army soldier who had recently accused his seniors of mistreatment, was found dead in his barracks in Maharashtra. The deceased officer, identified as 33-year-old Lance Naik Roy Mathew, was found dead on Thursday after being reported missing for the past few days.
According to the details of the case provided, Mathew had gone missing from his artillery center on Feb 25, after his video went viral on the internet. In that video, Mathew had criticized the British-era ‘sahayak’ or orderly system in the Indian Army. He also described how his senior officers used him for personal and menial tasks, like even taking care of their dogs.
According to Mathew’s wife, he often complained to him of how the culture of ‘servitude’ prevailed in the unit and how junior employees were forced to do domestic work at officers’ residences.
“He [Roy] called me in tears and said channels were playing clips of him.I want to know what happened to him,” ANI quoted Mathew’s wife Fini Roy as saying. “I don’t have wealth or political influence, there’s no one to help. I want to know what happened to my son,” said his father.
Mathew served in the Indian for 13 years and in the end this is what he got for his service. Mathew’s family had demanded justice in this case and are asking for thorough investigations into his death.
“The CO (commanding officer) informed us that a body similar to that of Roy has been found and it was shifted to a hospital for post-mortem. Other than this we haven’t received any other information,” Roy’s brother John Mathew said.
Meanwhile the Indian Army maintains that Mathew went on AWOL absent without official leave)” within 24 hours of the video being aired on February 24, according to the Times of India.
