Imran Khan clarifies his derogatory remarks about foreign PSL players
Wednesday, March 8th, 2017 3:25:09 by fatimaarshadPakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan landed himself in trouble when a video leaked online showing him using derogatory and foul language for foreign players who participated in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Lahore. Khan called the player ‘phateechar’ which refers to them being third class or useless.
A lot of people, including the chairman’s own supporters were shocked and dismayed over his use of words and expressed their outrage over the issue.
Khan recently appeared on a local news channel and clarified what he meant when he used those words. The PTI chief said that the remarks were not meant to humiliate the cricketers, as they were all ‘pure cricketing terms’ of his time.
“We used the terms like Relu Katta, Fokker or Jet to describe cricketers, when we used to play at Lahore Gymkhana,” Khan said during the news show.
“We referred Relu Katta to a player who would both bowl and bat, but would not perform either way. These terms are not derogatory, they rather describe marginal players,” he explained.
Asked about comments being relayed by Indian media as ‘racist’, Khan out rightly denied it saying, “I have always fought against racism. I and Viv Richards always refused to play counties, where there racism existed”.
Despite his clarification, many people are still not buying what he said and believe that Khan disrespected the foreign players who came to Lahore to play the PSL final.
Khan was against the idea of hosting the final in Lahore from the beginning as he believed that the security of the country was at stake. “Had there been even a firecracker boom anywhere in Lahore, it would have buried international cricket in Pakistan.” Khan said.
